TEPCO Seeks Local Governments Permission To Restart No. 6 Generator At Khiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. (TEPCO) is seeking approval from three local governments, the city of Kashiwazaki, the village of Kariwa and Niigata Prefecture to restart the No. 6 1,356 megawatt (MW) generator at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant, Reuters reported. Earlier, the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan gave its permission to restart the generator at the plant, and the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency under the trade ministry has given its approval in earlier week.

In May 2009, TEPCO has restarted the plant's 1,356 MW No.7 reactor. And the reactor is presently generating electricity at full capacity.

Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant has seven nuclear generators with a total capacity of 8.21 gigawatts. If the restart of No.6 unit is approved, a third of the nuclear plant's capacity will be returned online.
